/ Geography Assignment!
On Wednesday, August 15 2007, an earthquake of 8.0 magnitude hit the central coast of Peru at 23:40:58 UTC (18:40:58 local time). It lasted for about 3 minutes. The South America Plate moving up and seaward over the Nazca Plate caused the Peru earthquake. It is a kind of earthquake that experts say that will happens about once every 100 years.

There were more than 500 people dead and 1600 injured. The Peru earthquake affected 85,000 people including thousands whom were left homeless. In some parts of Peru, there were no water, electricity and communication. In Lima, the buildings shake and electricity was cut off in some areas. In Pisco, which was the center of destruction, 70 percent of the houses were badly damaged or destroyed. More than 200 people were buried in the rubble of a church where they were attending a service when the earthquake happens. In Inca, which was a city of 300 000, a quarter of the buildings collapsed.

The government of Peru, with the help of other associations, search for survivors, evacuate the injured, remove rubble, provide shelter for those who lost their homes, ensure that the affected people are save and secure, provide food and water for them and provide education for the children.

To minimize damage, I think that the buildings should be earthquake-resistant as a lot of buildings collapsed when there is an earthquake. The buildings should have interior support walls that are known as shear walls. The shear walls are made of reinforced concrete so, it will strengthen the structure and help resist rocking forces. The affected people should not panic when they come into emergency like this.
